Austrian Postal Codes FormatAustrian postal codes were introduced in 1966. Every Austrian postal code consists of 4 digits. The first digit refers to the state e.g. 1xxx is for Vienna, 5xxx is for Salzburg and east Upper Austria. The second one indicates of the regional area in the state. The third digit is used for the routing allocation. And the last digit refers to the post office.
There are some exceptions:
- In Vienna, the second and the third digits identify the district
- The airport has its own postal code (1300)
- Several large companies have their own postal codes as well
